Shanghai Ranking: Utrecht in top of academic ranking world universities
2 November 2009 – Utrecht is one of the world's 100 best universities. The Shanghai Jiao Tong ranking 2009 underlines the Netherlands’ strong academic standing, both in Europe and worldwide.
Utrecht University ranks number 11 in Europe and number 52 in the world.
Harvard University heads the list. Two other American educational institutes - Stanford and Berkeley - are ranked two and three respectively. The first European university, Cambridge, appears at number four on the list.
The rest of the top 10 are as follows:
5) Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
6) California Institute of Technology
7) Columbia University
8) Princeton University
9) University of Chicago
10) University of Oxford

208 out of the 501 ranked universities are from Europe. Aside from the classic British educational institutes the ETH Zurich scores prominently high at rank 23. Utrecht University scores particularly high in the 2008 citation index and the number of scientific publications published between 2004 and 2008.
